Nature Bathing

Last month, we went over an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) tapping sequence for emotional release. This month, we're going to discuss the practice of nature bathing, also known as forest bathing or shinrin-yoku.

Taking time out in nature can help you become more present with yourself. In doing so, you will be able to reclaim your personal space (boundaries) to know what’s yours to hold while also allowing you to more easily release toxins and energies that are not serving your most authentic self.

In addition to helping you set boundaries, spending 1-2 hours in a forest, unplugged, has proven health benefits that include:

  • Lowering blood pressure

  • Lowering blood sugar levels

  • Lifting depression

  • Weight loss

  • Improved concentration and memory

  • Improved cardiovascular health

  • A boost in anti-cancer protein production due to the body’s increase in natural killer (NK) cells

Nature bathing is less about taking a power-walk or running through the forest for vigorous exercise. It's more about slowing down, taking the time to engage in an immersive sensory experience so you can become more mindful of yourself and your relationship to the natural world.

Breathe in deeply, inhale the scent of pine. Notice how it awakens your mind.

Feel the mud between your toes. Observe the cooling sensation as it cleanses the toxins from your body.

Listen to the hummingbird wiz by. Watch it move effortlessly in search of sweet nectar.

Taste the edible fern with its fresh earthy flavor. Thank it for providing nourishment to your body.

While it’s preferable to physically go out into nature where there are trees, nature bathing can still be done in the comfort of your own home. You can bring the natural world to you with the arts of

  • Bonsai

  • Flower arranging

  • Sandbox Play

You can also bathe in an Epsom salt detox bath, adding baking soda as a pH balancer with optional crystals and essential oils as an extra boost.

Detox baths can be done either in a tub where you immerse yourself fully or in a foot soak.

When you spend time out in nature (or bringing nature to you) you are are giving yourself the gift of health and wellness.
